What ROI means: Return on each buy-in. ROI of 15% = $1.15 returned for every $1 paid in tournaments, on average. Real-world winning MTT players hover around 10–25% ROI at recreational stakes. Anything above 40% is either a small sample or you should be playing higher stakes.

What std deviation means: How variable your results are per tournament. A typical MTT has a std dev around 150–250% of the buy-in. Higher variance (deep-stack tournaments, top-heavy payouts) = more swings = need more buy-ins to survive.

How to use this: Plug in honest numbers — pessimistic ROI, realistic stddev — and check that your risk of ruin is under 5%. If it's not, drop buy-in size or build the bankroll bigger before moving up. Most pros target 1% RoR over a year; rec players often play with 20–50% RoR without realizing it.
